On May 17, 2024, PERI and the Asian Growth Research Institution (AGI) in Japan held first Joint Seminar at AGI in Japan, following the MOU on October 12, 2023. This seminar, under the theme of “Measures for Low Birth Rates and Aging Populations,” discussed and held a forum on the current state of low birth rates and aging populations in South Korea and Japan.

ㅇ Theme: Measures for Low Birth Rates and Aging Populations

Professor Young-j0on Jeon of Hanyang University, a research fellow at PERI, presented on “Pension Reform in the Era of Low Birth Rates and Aging Populations: The Case of Korea,” while Professor Hata, Chairman of the AGI Board, presented on “Pension Reform in Japan’s Aging Society.”

The seminar shared various statistics and research findings on the current state of low birth rates and aging populations in South Korea and Japan. In particular, There was an in-depth discussion on the severe population decline in Korea and its economic and social impacts. Experts pointed to the major causes of low birth rates, such as economic burdens, difficulties in balancing work and family, and housing issues, emphasizing the need for policy approaches to address these problems.

This seminar served as a significant opportunity to once again highlight the seriousness of the issues surrounding low birth rates and aging populations, and to explore various measures to address them. Building on the diverse opinions and proposals presented at this seminar, PERI and AGI plan to formulate and implement concrete policies going forward.
